Dr. Eesa Bastaki of IEEE UAE Section
Topic: Technology: Past, Present & Future
Biography: Eesa M. Bastaki received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego in 1981 and 1982, and the Ph.D. degree in Frame Synchronization in Communication Systems from the University of California, Irvine in 1989. He is currently an assistant professor of Electrical Engineering (Communications) in the UAE University, and the Director of Computer Center at UAE University. He was the Assistant Dean for Students Affairs in the Faculty of Engineering from 1992 to 1996. He was the Head of Energy Section at the Technology and Energy Research Center (TERC) from 1990-1991, and from 1991-1992 he was the Head of Technology Section at TERC. His research interests are Digital Communications and Spread Spectrum Communications. He was the Chairman of an international conference on "Intelligent Applications on Communication and Power Systems (IACPS'97)" which was held in Al-Ain, UAE from April 6-8, 1997, and organized by UAE University and IEEE, UAE Section. He was a student member of IEEE from 1982 until 1989. From 1989 he became a full member of IEEE. He is currently a Senior Member of IEEE and the Chairman of IEEE, U.A.E. Section. He is a member of Society of Engineers at UAE and a member of New York Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Hosni Ghedira of Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST)
Topic: The new DubaiSat-1 mission and its potential to advance research in space technology and environmental remote sensing
Biography: Dr. Hosni Ghedira joined the American University in Dubai in 2008 as Associate Professor of Civil Engineering. He also serves as Visiting Scientist at the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST), DubaiSat-1 program. He received his MS degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Sherbrooke (Canada) and his PhD in water sciences from the University of Quebec (Canada) in 1997 and 2001, respectively. Before joining AUD, Dr Ghedira spent six years at the City University of New York as assistant professor and research associate professor. He also acted as director of the Environmental Remote Sensing and Image Processing Laboratory at the NOAA Cooperative Remote Sensing Science & Technology Center (NOAA-CREST) in New York for more than four years. Professor Ghedira has authored and co-authored more than 50 publications in peer reviewed journals and referred conference proceedings. He has also supervised five Ph.D. theses and seven M.Sc. theses in civil engineering during his tenure at the City University of New York. During the past two years, Dr. Ghedira has been actively involved in several research projects with the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science & Technology (EIAST). His current research activities with EIAST focus on developing new satellite-based tools to forecast detect and monitor different environmental hazards in the UAE and the Gulf region. Currently, Dr Ghedira is supervising four UAE engineers and graduate students working on four different research projects (water quality monitoring, dust and sand storms monitoring, fog forecasting and monitoring, and air quality monitoring).
