<title>Recent Advances and Applications of The Continuous Transverse Stub (CTS) Array Antenna</title>
<description>Originally invented in the early 1990&#8217;s, the &#8220;Continuous Transverse Stub (CTS)&#8221; array antenna has more recently enjoyed increased adoption in a broad range of Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Radar and Communication applications. These products embody both staring and scanning (phased-array) extensions of the original technology, improved and adapted for the challenging demands of various fixed, ground-mobile, and aeronautical users and platforms. Utilizing over-moded parallel-plate (TEm) transmission line as both its feed and radiator basis, this low-profile planar array technology exhibits a number of favorable properties in terms of antenna efficiency, operating bandwidth, sidelobe control, polarization diversity, active scan impedance, and overall tolerance insensitivity. This presentation will briefly describe and quantify the technical basis and design properties of the CTS array by way of specific examples including Commercial and Government low-profile antenna products for Radar, Point-to-Point (PTP) communication, Man-Portable SATCOM, and high data rate Satellite-on-the-Move (SOTM) applications.

      <title>Modern Coding in Practice</title>
<description>IEEE Communications, Signal Processing and Vehicular Technology Chapter Meeting

The discovery of turbo codes in 1993 led to a frenzy of research activity that resulted in a number of related codes, collectively referred to as turbo-like codes or modern codes. As rapidly as researchers have developed theoretical tools to explain the performance of these codes, so to have practitioners moved them into products. This talk will provide an overview of modern codes with some theory and some practice. Examples of design trades faced by engineers designing high-speed and low-complexity codecs will be given.

      <title>SBIR in Transition</title>
<description>You attended the Government sponsored Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) meetings and learned how to submit a proposal&#8212;what next? For the high tech entrepreneur, should you even consider the SBIR Program? If you looked at the Program before but had trouble commercializing, you might (re)consider the Program as a funding source for your new product development. Considering potential award increases and other changes and coupled with the present financial crisis, the SBIR Program may represent an opportunity. This workshop guides your decision making from a purely business viewpoint.

The workshop is for the advanced technology Small Business Concern and considers transitioning technology to product development, marketing the Government, and finances. You receive an insider&#8217;s treatment of agency programs, how topics are selected, and how proposals are really evaluated and selected. While the focus is on the DoD and its version of the SBIR Program, the treatment applies to all agencies. Specifically, find:
* An update + impact of proposed legislative changes
* How to decide if Program is for you by planning to Phase 3 before Phase 1
* Essentials of cost estimating for Phase 2 and beyond
* The real differences in Marketing the Government vs. Commercial Sector
* Key financial factors to consider in using the SBIR Program

It identifies and suggests ways to overcome the 6 main obstacles in transitioning from Phase 2 to Commercialization: your strategy, the maturity level of your technology, your product&#8217;s producibility, testing and evaluation by the customer, alliances, and finances beyond Phase 2.

FEE: $50 (includes refreshments)

PARKING: Free

<title>What Every Comm Engineer Should Know About Digital Communications</title>
<description>This whirlwind talk endeavors to reinforce the important operations and concepts in digital communications. We deal with signal types, degradation types, fading channels, parameters such as time-bandwidth product, and how we use them. Did Nyquist teach us anything important about pulse shaping? You bet. What did Shannon teach us about capacity and ultimate performance? We show how to make design choices for meeting difficult system requirements. We additionally describe some of the creative developments such as Turbo, LDPC, and MIMO that have transformed this technology from the simple to the sublime. This intense hour-and-a-half talk is geared toward designers, managers, software developers, and whoever wants to partake in the passion that drives communication engineers.

The event is open to both IEEE members and non-members at no cost. Details and map at "www.ewh.ieee.org/r6/lac/csspsvts/IEEE.html":http://www.ewh.ieee.org/r6/lac/csspsvts/IEEE.html. <title>Desensitized Halfband Filters (IEEE Distinguished Lecture)</title>
<description>A very common component in digital circuitry for communications systems is the halfband filter. Halfband filters are often used in cooperation with up-samplers and down-samplers when a sampling-rate change is required. While techniques for designing these filters are well known, an entirely new design method has just been discovered wherein these filters can be made to possess a significant insensitivity to the filter&#8217;s tap coefficient values. Such insensitivity can be exploited to yield halfband filters with reduced hardware requirements, which leads to circuits having lower power consumption, higher operating speeds, and smaller IC area. This talk will give a brief introduction to the concept of halfband filters and the applications of halfband filters. It will then explain the rationale and the method for the desensitizing of the filters and, finally, will illustrate through design examples and further explanation how the insensitivity improves upon the conventional designs.</description>

      <title>Roll-based Collaboration</title>
<description>Collaboration is a common activity in a society of people. Collaboration means to work together. It commonly mentions a joint intellectual work. We can infer that collaboration or group work is required when one single person cannot complete a whole task. Computer-based systems are tools to extend the abilities for people to work. They should not only provide virtual environments or platforms for people to work but also provide more technologies and mechanisms to improve people's work. Clear role specification and related mechanisms play an essential role in developing the intelligent collaborative systems. In this talk, we intend to clarify the concept of roles and role-based collaboration and answer the following questions: What do we mean by roles in collaboration? Why do we need them? How can we support them? What are their implications in software engineering?
