MakeIt Labs Tour

      <uid>F110D734-B215-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

MakeIt Labs is a hackerspace, also known as a makerspace or an open-access community workshop located in Nashua, NH. Members pay a monthly fee to have full access to a 6000 ft2 workshop filled with parts, tools, and equipment. The list includes welders, laser cutter, automotive lift, glass and pottery kilns, powdercoating equipment, end mills, lathes, metal fabrication tools, electronics testing equipment, and much more, “Everything to Build Anything”. Most importantly, MakeIt Labs is also a community of people who enjoy making things of all kinds. Its members are engineers, tinkerers, inventors and hobbyists who collaborate, share knowledge and breed enthusiasm for all things hands-on.

From East Hollis St, turn onto Chase St (right if coming from downtown, left if coming from Hudson), then left onto Crown St. From Crown St, take a right onto the dirt access road to the trainyard. Take the first right turn on this, and our facility will be on the right end of the building.

Important to know, Google Maps (as well as many GPS units) will incorrectly label the dirt road as Colburn St, however the street sign leads to a different area, so disregard the sign that says Colburn St on Crown St.

Constraints in the Mobile World

      <uid>BEA1ADDA-CF31-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

The mobile world is upon us. IDC reports that sales of smart phones exceeded 491 million units in 2011. Nielsen, comScore, and Pew surveys confirm that smart phones now account for almost 50% of mobile devices in use. The pervasiveness of these devices is often seen in utopian terms. However, the reality is far less simple.
Mobile devices have raw computing power that not so long ago was the province of corporate datacenters. However, they operate under far more resource and connectivity constraints than their permanently umbilical-connected counterparts. Power and connectivity are critical. While desktop machines have a virtually unlimited supply of power and copious bandwidth, mobile devices are challenged in both. In connectivity, mobile devices are challenged by signal coverage and transmission capacity, particularly in high usage or less well covered areas.
Screen real-estate is similarly a limitation of devices in the pocket form factor. Not discounting the capabilities of tablet devices, such as Apple’s newest generation iPad, the screens of pocket sized devices are challenging.
The power of today’s mobile world is impressive, but the seductiveness of mobile applications (“apps”) can be deceptive. Gaining maximum utility from the mobile platform requires understanding how these constraints affect the design, scope, implementation, deployment, and employment of apps, both in the corporate and personal spheres.

      <uid>A3FDB31E-E03B-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

The impact of background radiation on microelectronics is generally unappreciated. Soft errors, or single event upsets, are random, transient, recoverable failures unrelated to any defects or device shifts. There are three main types of radiation that cause soft errors in integrated circuits. The discoveries of these various mechanisms are discussed from a historical perspective, and the current physical understanding of each is presented. Next, methods used to test and model the soft error rate of circuits are explained. Finally, process, technology, and circuit mitigation techniques are covered.

Medical Device Interoperability

      <uid>4741DEB0-DFBA-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

Information technologies like the patient electronic medical record (EMR) have been an effective solution for many administrative processes in the hospital but unfortunately most of these technologies do not benefit the chaotic environment at the bedside. The EMR has instead increased the burden on the clinical staff that must now enter data into them. Tablet PCs, PCs on carts, and personal digital assistants (PDA) are all technologies trying to improve efficiency of the data entry into the EMR at the bedside, but do not fit well into the nursing practices of care. Most of the data transcribed into the chart is generated from digital electronic medical devices, yet in most cases this information is not electronically transmitted to the EMR. In hospitals where it is transmitted, only in a few instances do they have means to retrieve the information back to the point of care where it is most valuable. The integration of Medical Devices is key to complete and accurate EMRs as well as systems level improvements in patient safety.

Health Care is the combination of many systems including people, information systems, medical devices and most importantly the patient. Designing any part of a system without an understanding of how it will be used within the system will cause unintended consequences. Designing safety into the system is key to preventing adverse events and can be done by analyzing processes and work flow and designing in interlocks where mistakes could occur. This presentation will discuss the requirements necessary for successful medical device interoperability.

      <uid>586DF3F0-CB5A-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

Joint IET and IEEE Meeting:

Understanding of how neural circuits implement brain functions, and how these computations go awry in brain disorders, is a top priority. Over the last several years Dr. Boyden has been developing a rapidly-expanding suite of genetically-encoded reagents that, when expressed in specific neuron types in the nervous system, enable their electrical activities to be powerfully and precisely activated and silenced in response to pulses of light.

These tools are in widespread use for analyzing the causal role of defined cell types in normal and pathological brain functions. Dr. Boyden will explain how these tools are being used to enable systematic analysis of neural circuit functions in the fields of emotion, sensation and movement, and in neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Distinguished Microwave Lecturer Presentation -
"Circuit to System Level Practical Microwave Education"

Recent years have seen rapid changes in RF techniques as well as technology. This trend is continuing enabling the use of increasingly higher RF frequencies with their inherent advantages of smaller size components and larger bandwidth. In particular, the use of planar circuit architecture and integration using micro-machining technology has opened up new opportunities in terms of reduction in cost, weight, volume, power consumption as well as extension of operating frequencies. In keeping with the advances in technology, the design approach is also undergoing a rapid change through improved digital signal processing (DSP) techniques and CAD tools. Thus the scope of RF Design Techniques and Technology, that was confined to lower microwave frequency bands (~10 GHz), has expanded to encompass the millimeter wave frequency band (30-300 GHz). This paradigm places new demands on Microwave Education. The responsibility of microwave educators today is to drive students beyond the basic concepts to circuit and system level practical hands-on-education in order to produce highly skilled and motivated wireless engineers who are directly usable to the industry.
The present talk is focussed to motivate students to opt for career in RF and Microwave Engineering. Starting with the behavior of conventional circuit elements at RF and Microwave frequencies and describing equivalent lumped circuit models of distributed transmission line elements, different technologies available to a designer to built Microwave and Millimeter Wave Integrated Circuits and subsystem will be presented. Starting from conventional microstrip technology, other key technologies including suspended stripline, dielectric integrated guides, fin line, MMIC, RF CMOS and LTCC will be briefly described. Design methodology including use of existing CAD tools leading to development of several high performance components/ subsystems at lower microwave frequencies as well as millimeter wave frequencies centered around 35 GHz, 60 GHz and 140 GHz will be presented. Micromachining has recently been applied to millimeter wave field to create low loss and high performance components and antennas.Methodology for the design, development and fabrication of passive components, antennas and switches at millimeter wave frequencies will be described next. Concept of developing reconfigurable RF circuits using either variable capacitors or switches will then be briefly presented. Future research activities in our group in the area of RF Nanotechnology will also be discussed. In the end, practical demonstration of several pre-fabricated passive and active components at Microwave frequencies will be given using a handheld network analyzer and special custom made test jigs.

IEEE Milestones Award Ceremony

      <uid>D12EB2C0-E5DB-102F-97F7-0050568D3657</uid>

The Boston Section of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) invites the loran community to attend the IEEE Milestones Award Ceremony, which will be held on the 27 of June 2012 at the Westin Copley Place Hotel. This year, the IEEE Board of Directors and Meeting Series are held in Boston. These meetings are attended by hundreds of IEEE members, students, and volunteer members from all over the world. The Milestones Event will take place on Wednesday, 27 June, between 4:30 to 7:30 PM. Three commemorative IEEE milestone plaques will be awarded:

1. LORAN http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestone-Nomination:LORAN

Citation for Loran 1940 to 1946 reads:
The rapid development of Loran -- long range navigation - under wartime conditions at MIT’s Radiation Lab was not only a significant engineering feat but also transformed navigation, providing the world’s first near-real-time positioning information. Beginning in June 1942, the United States Coast Guard helped develop, install and operate Loran until 2010.
2. WHIRLWIND COMPUTER http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestone-Nomination:Whirlwind_Computer

The citation for the Whirlwind Computer 1944 – 1959 reads:
The Whirlwind computer was developed at 211 Massachusetts Avenue by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was the first real-time high-speed digital computer using random-access magnetic-core memory. Whirlwind featured outputs displayed on a CRT, and a light pen to write data on the screen. Whirlwindʼs success led to the United States Air Forceʼs Semi Automatic Ground Environment - SAGE - system and to many business computers and minicomputers.

3. SAGE http://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestone-Nomination:SAGE_(Semi_Automatic_Ground_Environment)

The citation for SAGE-Semi-Automatic Ground Environment 1951-1958 is:
In 1951 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology undertook the development of a continental air defense system for North America. The centerpiece of this defense system was a large digital computer originally developed at MIT. The MIT Lincoln Laboratory was formed to carry out the initial development of this system and the first of some 23 SAGE control centers was completed in 1958. SAGE was the forerunner of today’s digital computer networks.

Participants in the ceremony will include IEEE President Gordon Day, Director of Lincoln Laboratory Dr. Eric Evans, and Robert Everett. Professor Jay Forrester has been invited together with the Whirlwind Pioneers. Erik Johannessen of Megapulse, Deborah Douglas, MIT’s Curator of Science and Technology, and the USCG District One are expected to participate in this event.

Members and non-members are invited to attend another milestones celebration. This event is free and opened to the public, but registration is required for those interested in attending.
