When I was a young salesperson, I sold a few dozen cast resin power transformers to a client who used them to replace existing liquid filled substation transformers. The cast resin transformers were a perfect fit, efficient, eliminated the risk of fluid leaks, offered 50% overload capacity, and were quiet as could be. The customer was happy; until one night when one of the cast resin transformers experienced a fault, taking the substation and the factory off line. A cable tie supporting the temperature monitor control wiring became brittle and broke, allowing the wiring it was supporting to fall against the transformer coil, where it came in contact with the HV tap hardware. Boom! Finn received an unpleasant 2:00 AM phone call. Fortunately, no one was injured, but they could have been, for the standard NEMA 1 substation transformer enclosure is not designed to contain an arc flash. The transformer manufacturer used general purpose nylon cable ties rather than a tie specifically designed for high temperature applications. Engineers apply significant resources into designing reliable systems, specifying the right circuit breakers, fuses, and distribution equipment; yet, an improperly applied small, seemingly simple item, like a cable tie, can lead to system failure, financial loss, injury, and worse. Selecting The Right Cable Tie for the Job
Cari Helberg is the Sales Application Engineer, supporting the HellermannTyton electrical division for North America. She is a licensed master electrician, and an IAEI-certified electrical inspector. She has served as president of the MN International Electrical Inspectors Association, and as on alternate on CMP 19 for the National Electrical Code. In her spare time, she teaches classes in code calculations, code update, and NEC Article 690.

Over 13 years in electrical industry, conducted short circuit calculations, electrical device evaluations, protective device coordination, arc flash analysis, grounding analysis, load flow analysis, power factor correction studies, power quality site surveys, modification of the electrical schematics, and oversee construction/installations. Currently working as a regional field application engineer for ABB’s EP division. Working on generating technical specifications for electrical equipment, developing training programs, product review and support product development as per applicable ANSI/IEEE and IEC standards.
