Tolk Synchronous Condenser– 9:20 am
Mr. Taylor joined Southwestern Public Service in 1974 as a Mechanical Design Engineer where he designed pump and piping systems for Harrington and Tolk Stations. He later became Resident Mechanical Engineer for Construction at Tolk Station. He remained there after the plant was constructed and worked as Plant Services Superintendent. In 1997 he went to Utility Engineering, where he did mechanical design on new combined cycle power plants around the country. In 2005, he was brought back into the main Xcel Energy office doing capital project work for all the SPS power plants. He is now a Project Manager working on emergent and Major capital projects. Mr. Taylor has been a licensed engineer in the state of Texas since 1979.
Trish Smith, CAE and Jennifer McEwan, Ph. D. will be joining us to present the recent Texas state legislative session and its impact on the practice of engineering in Texas. Trends in other states as well as political tides in Texas and their potential impacts on the profession will be discussed. Trish B. Smith, CAE (Certified Association Executive) is the Executive Director of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Trish has been with TSPE for 20 years overseeing the programs and staff of the organization. She is also the Executive Director and a Trustee of the Texas Engineering Foundation and manages the TSPE Political Action Committee for Engineers (PACE). She is currently serving a third term as a member of the NSPE Executive Committee, Board of Directors and House of Delegates. Jennifer McEwan, Ph. D. is widely known for her transportation expertise and knowledge of project development and advancement. Prior to founding Grace & McEwan Consulting, Jennifer served as Senior Policy Director at the international law firm Greenberg Traurig. She currently serves as TSPE Legislative & Governmental Affairs Director, Treasurer of the Transportation Advocates of Texas, and policy director for the Texas Transportation Alliance.

Martin Cameron has a Bachelors’ Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado and a Masters’ Degree in Engineering Management from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has over 25 years of industry experience in hydro generation, substation protection and substation controls. In 2014 he started his involvement with FACTS projects and has successfully completed a SVC protection and controls refurbishment and two new SVC projects all in New Mexico. With the two new SVC projects in New Mexico, an advanced control function was implemented between these two SVC’s where an IEEE paper was written and published. He is acting secretary in the IEEE I9 working group, which is the Guide for Protecting Transmission Shunt Compensators. He is also the secretary for the IEEE I2 working group, which is the Guide for Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors. If he is not working, you probably can find him on his road bike.
