Latest Trends in Non-Linear Device Characterization and Modelling for 5G Applications

The Focus Microwaves Group comprises Focus Microwaves Inc., Mesuro Ltd., and Auriga PIV Tech Inc. Focus Microwaves is a pioneering engineering company, founded by Dr. Christos Tsironis in 1973 proposing electro-mechanical tuners. Mesuro’s technology is working in the fields of non-linear measurement systems, device characterization, and circuit design. Auriga PIV Tech. Inc. develops and provides pulsed IV/RF characterization systems and bias tees.


In today’s RF/uW industry the design engineers face many technical challenges.  The products on the market offer different solutions and variety of benefits for specific applications.  Whether it be high power device modeling, complex modulated load-pull for wireless applications or extremely high power pulsed IV characterization for automotive applications, the Focus Microwaves offers many advanced technical solutions for both device characterization and modeling.  With recent advances in technology, commercial wireless standards are moving more and more to mmWave frequencies where on-wafer device characterization provides more and more challenges.  The biggest hurdle for passive load-pull at these higher frequencies is the loss between the tuner and the device under test. A new innovative technique is now available to maximize tuning range for on wafer device characterization, allowing for not only high VSWR tuning but harmonic tuning up to 110GHz. Similarly, 5G communication standards require more and more channel bandwidth because of which the need for wideband tuning is continuously increasing.  Wideband impedance tuning is now possible with Focus’s RAPID active loop solution which has 500MHz of instantaneous bandwidth allowing users to perform real time modulated load-pull measurements.

Dr. Sajjad Ahmed

Dr. Sajjad Ahmed of Focus Microwave Group

Biography:

Sajjad Ahmed was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 1983. He received a Bachelors of electronics degree from the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences, Pakistan and the Masters in electronics degree from University of Gavle, Sweden and TU Berlin in Germany. He completed his doctoral thesis at XLIM France in the domain of RF and microwave engineering. He was a postdoctoral candidate at NI's Network analysis Centre of Excellence (NACE) in Zaventem Belgium, working on a European commission funded research program  "Metrology for ultrafast electronics and high-speed communications".
His research interests include the Time Domain nonlinear characterization of RF & Microwave devices and systems and specializes in Load pull and large signal characterization of RF & microwave devices in non 50 Ohms environment. He is Currently working at Focus Microwaves Group as Business Development Manager where his main responsibilities are developing technical strategy for competitive positioning of all existing solutions and latest innovations, maintain a close interaction with all existing and potential customers and serve as a bridge between Sales/Marketing and Engineering teams.
