Oscillations in Renewable Energy Power Generation and Transmission Systems and Its Mitigation
The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at McGill University and the Power Electronics Society chapter in collaboration with the Industry Applications Society, Power & Energy Society and Industrial Electronics Society chapters in the IEEE Montreal Section cordially invite you to a seminar presented by Dr. Qirong Jiang, professor from the Department of Electrical Engineering in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
Oscillations in Renewable Energy Power Generation and Transmission Systems are very common. Features of the oscillations and challenges in oscillation analysis and its mitigation will be discussed. A PMSG-based wind power system with positive damping for small perturbation and negative damping for large disturbance will be introduced. The characteristics and mechanism of frequency coupling phenomenon in oscillations of voltage source converter (VSC) will be presented. The coupling mechanism and frequency distribution characteristics of the three coupling paths in a VSC controller: phase-locked loop (PLL), DC voltage fluctuation and over-modulation will be analyzed. Controller design to suppress oscillations of multi-scale nonlinear systems will be discussed. STATCOM-based sub-synchronous control interactions mitigation algorithm for DFIG-based wind farms will be presented.

Dr. Qirong Jiang of Tsinghua University
Qirong Jiang received his B.S. degree and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1992 and 1997 respectively. In 1997, he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University as a lecturer. He later became an associate professor in 1999 and a professor in 2006.
His research interests include Electromagnetic Transient Analysis of Power System, Electromagnetic Compatibility of Power Electronic Systems, Power Quality Analysis Evaluation and Mitigation, Micro Grid Analysis and Control.
He co-authored three books on FACTS Technology and Power Quality and published more than 100 technical papers. He holds more than 20 China patents. Dr. Jiang was awarded the first-grade prize of China Electric Power Science and Technology Awards in 2014, the special grade prize of China Southern Power Grid Scientific and Technological Progress Award 2012, the first-grade prize of National Award for Outstanding Teaching Achievement in 2005 and the second-grade prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2002 respectively. He is a member of China Standard Voltages, Current Ratings and Frequencies Committee (SAC/TC1) now
