Topic 1: “Blockchain Applied to Telecom”

Abstract

Blockchain distributed ledger technologies (DLT) in Telecommunications is a new concept that can tremendously improve telecom networking operations and customer-facing processes experience, adding a new layer of authentication, validation and security for all telecom assets and transactions.  Telecom companies will benefit from enterprise Blockchain solutions to enhance their existing IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operations Technology). Blockchain/DLT is still a nascent technology with some challenges for wide adoption, such as scalability, interoperability, standards, privacy, security, and others, that need to be addressed for telecom-specific applications. This talk will introduce some basic concepts of Blockchain applied to Telecommunications.

Bio

Claudio Lima, Ph.D. leads Enterprise Blockchain, IoT and AI in telecom/IT, energy and smart city digital transformation.  He has a Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (UKC-UK) and worked as DMTS-Research Scientist at Sprint Advanced Technology Labs, in Silicon Valley-CA. Dr. Lima is currently the co-founder of the Blockchain Engineering Council (BEC) and chair and vice-chair of the IEEE Blockchain IoT and Energy standards WGs and also chair of the IEEE Blockchain Transactive Energy (IEEE BCTE) initiative. He work as Blockchain cybersecurity advisory board member of the US DOE/PNNL.  He can be reached at clima@blockchain-eng.org.

 

Topic 2: “Distributed Ledger use in Telecommunications for Certificate Management”

Abstract

Distributed Ledger technology is unfolding rapidly and the potential for many use cases are being theorized and debated. In mature industries such as Telecommunications which have well-versed  legacy technology, it is often less clear where distributed ledger technologies will provide clear unique advantage. Our session explores the nature of current technologies for certificate management and global deficiencies in how Certificate Hierarchy and in particular Certificate Revocation is handled. We propose that this is an area where an immediate benefit can be seen for distributed ledger technology in the Telecommunication sector. Our session will cover provisioning and management of certificates for application in the Telecommunication sector and how distributed ledger technology may be the answer to some globally unresolved issues with management of Certificate Revocation lists.

Topic 3: "5G and blockchain impact in shaping the future smart cities and telecommunications”

Abstract

 5G and blockchain are two potentially disruptive technologies that could shape the future of technology and telecommunications.

In 2020, the 5G rollout has already begun in select cities in the U.S. Global coverage with the technology becoming ubiquitous in the following years. In conjunction with Internet of Things devices, and 5G can add an enormous amount of value in building smart societies. Blockchain can benefit from the massive increases in bandwidth and range as well as the reductions in latency that 5G networks provide.

 The talk will provide some examples of impact of disruptive technologies in key use cases such as public safety, healthcare, network management and financial infrastructure.

Bio:

Fawzi is a visionary, thought leader, author and contributor in advancing adoption of technology in serving humanity.  He has over 35 years professional and leadership experience in the communications and networking areas in product development, marketing and services at Freescale, Nortel Networks and Teleglobe. He was chief architect in building national telecom network management and participated in the development of ITU TMN M.3000. In 2009, Fawzi founded TelNet Management Consulting Inc. offering consulting services in the areas of disruptive technology positioning (5G, IoT, AI) and smart solutions development. www.telnetmanagement.com

As a senior member of IEEE, Fawzi is currently IEEE ComSoc Regional Director for North America (2020-2021) and chair of several chapters. Fawzi organized several events such as smart city summit (2019), Blockchain for Healthcare (2018). Fawzi has several publications and co-authored book on "Collaborative Internet of Things for Future Smart Connected Life and Business" published by Wiley.

Fawzi holds a Bachelor of Science with honors and distinction; Masters in Computer Science and Executive MBA.
