Topic: PG&E Volt/VAR Optimization Pilot Deployment Project Implementation Plan

Speakers: Rustom Dessai, PG&E and Andrija Sadikovic, Dorbs (Founder)

PG&E launched a 3-year pilot of Voltage and Reactive Power Optimization (also known as Volt Var Optimization, or VVO) in 2013. This presentation will cover results and learnings from PG&E's VVO Pilot, which project seeks to (1) enhance grid system monitoring and control, (2) manage grid system voltage and losses, and (3) support increased penetration of distributed renewable resources. Topics discussed will include:

  • PG&E assessment of Volt/VAR optimization systems available
  • PG&E analysis and identification of technology requirements necessary to support Volt/VAR optimization system implementation
  • Testing software that will control and use real-time information from SCADA-controlled distribution feeder equipment and SmartMeters to manage the distribution circuit voltage
  • Results from a field trial Volt/VAR optimization and telecommunications system on 14 distribution feeders in Fresno
  • Plans to evaluate how Smart Inverters can enhance VVO's benefits

Lunch will be provided (includes vegetarian). There will be a $5 fee to IEEE Members and a $10 fee to Non Members. Payments to be made in person (cash or check) at the event.
