IEEE Day on Oct. 6 - Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow

Let the celebration begin for IEEE Day in San Diego with this event showcasing the many faces of IEEE in San Diego. Thousands of San Diegans are members of IEEE and the San Diego Section includes dozens of technical society chapters that help advance the technical knowledge in specific technical areas and all major affinity groups serving to draw together members who share common non-technical affinities. With this year’s founding of the IEEE San Diego Women in Engineering group, we now have active groups for all four recognized affinity groups and the world’s only IEEE Cyber group. This San Diego event will include and introduce major IEEE initiatives and showcase the San Diego chapters and groups.  

Outside of San Diego, members around the world are organizing special events in celebration of IEEE Day on 6 October. Now in its sixth year, the day commemorates the anniversary of the 1884 meeting in Philadelphia where members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, one of IEEE’s predecessor societies, gathered for the first time to share technical ideas.

To commemorate the event, IEEE is offering a US $30 discount on dues for new members who join between 4 and 10 October. (The offer does not apply to student or graduate student memberships.) Kathleen A. Kramer

Kathleen A. Kramer of University of San Diego and IEEE Region 6

Biography:

Prof. Kathleen A. Kramer is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of San Diego. She received her doctorate in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology. She maintains an active research agenda and has over 90 publications in the areas of multi-sensor data fusion, intelligent systems, and neural and fuzzy systems. She has been a Member of Technical Staff at several companies, including ViaSat, Hewlett Packard, and Bell Communications Research. She is the 2015-16 Director-Elect for IEEE Region 6 (Western USA) and a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Aerospace Electronic Systems Society.

In addition to Prof. Kramer, this event will feature short presentations by leaders from our individual chapters and affinity groups.

Upkar Dhaliwal is the present IEEE San Diego Section Chair, and it’s EMB-S Chapter Chair. As a Professional Chartered Engineer of Engineering Council UK, he is a Senior Wireless & RF System Architect/Executive, Founder & CEO at Future Wireless Technologies; An Industry expert serving on numerous industrial/technical/policy bodies/start-ups and market leaders with specialized knowledge and technical leadership in the design and development of state of Wireless Technologies for Medical, Transport, Energy and Connectivity. Holds a Bachelors & Masters Degrees in Engineering from Leeds and University College London Universities respectively, He has served in many local San Diego, Regional and Society officer roles in IEEE for past 25 years.
