Feature-Rich Multimedia Authoring Tools and UI Designs

Many novice users struggle with multimedia authoring (MMA) tasks. MMA tools often have extensive feature sets and correspondingly complex user interfaces that impede these users’ creative endeavours.

First, I will discuss issues often observed in the design of feature-rich software tools such as MMA tools. I will then introduce several common approaches to address the barriers they pose for novice users. Finally, I will discuss a new approach that I developed to provide support for novice users so they can utilize existing MMA systems more effectively.

Biography:

Dr. Akiyama is a Human-Computer Interaction researcher and a part-time faculty in the Department of Math and Computing Science at Saint Mary's University.

His research focuses on the design, implementation and evaluation of digital tools that support creative tasks. His most recent project investigates and proposes a new concept of multimedia authoring environment that incorporates the Interactive Task-Viewer (ITV). The ITV is a support tool that visualizes complex multimedia authoring tasks and allows users to interact with it in order to obtain more task contextual information. Users can also use the ITV to perform certain MMA operations capitalizing on the task contextual information, rather than searching through menus and controls of the complex UI of existing MMA tools.
