SF PES / SCV PV Joint Chapter Meeting Special - Technical Presentation June 15 2016

Topic: PG&E Energy Storage Testing and Pilot Projects

Speaker: Jason Pretzlaf, Senior Engineer, PG&E

Since 2005 PG&E has been involved in a variety of projects to evaluate, deploy, test, and optimize the use of energy storage on the California electric grid. These projects consist of both laboratory and field installations of both battery and compressed air energy storage technologies, and have led to a greater understanding of the criteria that must be considered when evaluating the myriad of energy storage solutions available.  In the midst of all of this work, CPUC Decision 13-10-040 formally established energy storage megawatt targets for CPUC jurisdictional load serving entities with installations required by 2024. The Decision increased momentum in the energy storage industry for development of new products and put a new onus on electric utilities for integration of these resources on the grid. The presentation will discuss PG&E’s past, present, and future activities in the realm of energy storage and highlight some of the lessons learned along the way.

Lunch will be provided (includes vegetarian). There will be a $5 fee to IEEE Members and a $10 fee to Non Members. Payments to be made in person (cash or check) at the event.
