Topic:

3D Printing–Future of Manufacturing: The Fourth Wave of Human Civilization

A brief overview of the ongoing projects in the AM3 Lab is presented. The primary mission of the AM3 lab is to significantly incrrase the printing speed in order to compete with traditional manufacturing. Four projects are related to this mission, including MHz inkjet printing, a novel robotic printing technique, and two other projects on powder bed based 3D printing. In order to support this mission, a 3D nanoprinter is developed to fabricate some of the components that are needed for the development of the superfast 3D printers. In order to promote the use of 3D printing technology, the AM3 Lab is also exploring the frontier of the 4D printed soft robotics and developing a new 3D printable material.

Biography:

Dr. Wenchao Zhou is currently an assistant professor and holding the endowed 21st Century Professorship in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas. Prior to joining the UofA, he was a research associate at University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Lab and the Chief Research Engineer of AlpZhi Inc., a Georgia Tech startup company, where he was leading the development and commercialization of a disruptive 3D printing-based micro-lens fabrication technology under an NSF sponsored Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant. He received his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2014 from Georgia Tech with a focus on 3D printing technology for his PhD dissertation. He received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Xi’an Jiaotong University, respectively. He won the Best Paper Award at the 2011 International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping and was selected for the Higher Education Research Experiences fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2012. His talk in the 24th Annual International Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium (2013) was recognized with the Best Presentation Award. He was also named as one of the recipients for the prestigious Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Oversea Students in a global competition. He is the PI of the AM3 Lab that is dedicated to developing next generation 3D printing technologies and promoting the use of 3D printing technology to better our lives through excellent research, education, and service to the global 3D printing community.
