IEEE North Jersey Section Course:  DATA SCIENCE WITH PYTHON IN SEVEN DAYS

March 25, 2017 through May 6, 2017. Saturdays 9am-12pm (3/25, 4/1, 4/8, 4/15, 4/22, 4/29, 5/6).

The IEEE North Jersey Section is offering a course entitled "Data Science With Python" course. As more  and more organizations make a push for data-driven decisions, it is important to know how to extract value from the information available.

This course will be a broad survey of computational topics related to Data Science and Python. The intent is for course-takers to get a sampling of the various methods and techniques that exist for classifying and analyzing data as well as to become familiar with aspects of data visualization and analysis through Python. This is a hands-on, computational course. We will NOT be deriving proofs nor writing textbook algorithms from scratch, but instead we will learn to utilize existing libraries that will do the heavy computational lifting. There are weekly projects that students can choose to do to extend the classroom activities and to deepen their understanding.

There is no required text for this course. Notes will be provided as well as a myriad of online resources. It is required that students have installed at minimum Python 2.7.x as well as the following python libraries: numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, and matplotlib. This can be done via a pip install. A laptop with WiFI capability is highly recommended.

You will receive the IEEE Certificate of Completion (2 CEU - Continuing Education Unit) when you finish the course.

Manan Shah

Biography:

Instructor: Manan Shah, PhD has over 15 years experience between commercial real estate nance,
structured nance, gaming and gambling, and education. He has taught at the college and university level
for eight years. Recently, he was part of a data science team in the gaming industry. Dr. Shah developed
various analytics tools to increase monetization using some of the data analysis methods taught in this
course.

TOPICS:

This is a Data Science with Python course. As such, we will take a computational approach to learning more about both Data Science and Python.

-working with csv, numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, and matplotlib modules / libraries
-hypothesis testing (con dence intervals, t-test, z-test, 2-test, rank tests, A/B testing, type I / II error)
-Monte Carlo methods and Bootstrap sampling

-Linear Regression and Clustering

-Arti cial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithms

The course is intended to be subdivided into seven lectures, each three hours long for a total of 21 course
hours. Each lecture is further subdivided into roughly the topic introduction either as a
classical lecture or through computational examples for students to follow along. The remainder of the time
is expected to be hands-on work. The purpose of course lectures are to get students
familiarized with the topics.

Students should have already taken an introductory Python course that would have covered the basics of
working with Python's collection types (lists, tuples, dictionaries, sets), string manipulation, conditional
statements, and iteration (for loop, while statement). Preferred is some understanding of reading and
writing to les.
