DER Integration Issues/Opportunities and Potential Solutions

Please plan to attend this meeting of the Industry Applications Society. The Speakers will be Chase Sun from Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

California has a RPS (Renewable Portfolio Solicitation) goal of 33% energy penetration by 2020 and 50% energy penetration by 2030. Please note that the RPS values do not include large hydro or BTM renewables.  So, the actual renewable share of the energy mix may be higher than those goals indicate.  Most of the renewables are PV which often peak at noon time together.  PV has a fairly low capacity factor.  So, in order to reach 50% energy penetration, the PV capacity may need to be significantly higher than 50%.  At the same time, the noon time load may be significantly lower than peak load.

What needs to be done to achieve these renewable goals and still maintain existing power system safety, reliability, power quality, and affordability?

This presentation will discuss the various power system challenges with intermittent renewables, focusing on the existing radial distribution system design, and pose some potential solutions for the audience to consider.
