Battery Energy Storage System A Building Block of Microgrid

As more renewable energy resources are being implemented, over the past several years, microgrids have become a very hot topic. A microgrid is an integrated energy system consisting of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources (DER) which as an integrated system, can operate in parallel with the grid or in an intentional islanded mode. Solar, wind, fuel cell, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) are all building blocks of a microgrid. In this presentation, the presenter will talk about microgrids in general, with a focus on a key building block of microgrid, BESS, and their controls. The presentation will be held in an electrical equipment manufacturing facility in Hayward, CA, where a BESS was recently commissioned. The presentation will also cover some lessons learned, and will include a demo of the BESS and a tour of the electrical equipment manufacturing facility.

Dr. Yazhou (Joel) Liu is presently with Eaton as a Power System Engineering Specialist. Before joining Eaton, he worked as Engineering Manager at Schneider Electric to lead engineering services team in the Western US, as Sr. System Engineer at Honeywell, and as Sr. Power Conversation System Engineer at Thales where he worked on the design of the Boeing 787 aircraft electrical system.

He received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in electrical engineering with a focus on power system engineering. He has published over ten technical papers in leading international peer-reviewed journals and international conferences and two book chapters, with most of the publications in the field of power quality. He has been invited to give presentations at several US and international conferences, and he is also a frequent reviewer on international peer-reviewed journals in power engineering. He is an IEEE Sr. member and was a member of IEEE Task Force on Harmonic Modeling and Simulation. He is registered as a PE in the states of California, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
