Summary:

 

Marvin Hamon ,PE will review Solar Applications for new and existing switchboard applications.   Come learn the do’s and don’ts associated with applying Solar power to both new, and existing, electrical systems.

The latest Rotary UPS system designs combine simple efficient components to deliver a highly reliable critical power solution - featuring low energy losses, and low service costs.  The speaker will explain how the latest Rotary UPS solutions:

  • Protect equipment against mains voltage fluctuations, sags and microcuts.
  • Naturally compensate power factor without the need for PFC equipment.
  • Filter load harmonics and voltage harmonics from the mains.
  • Eliminate flicker

The speaker will explain how to integrate a rotary UPS system into your critical power design, and review the advantages of Rotary vs. battery UPS solutions.   Note that this is a technology presentation, and is more product focused than a typical IEEE presentation.    The evening will include dinner, hosted by IEM, and an IEM factory tour, providing a rare opportunity to see de-energized electrical distribution equipment on the factory floor.  This tour will help the visitor understand the definitions of "UL891 Switchboard", "UL1558 Switchgear", and provide a chance to see a variety of panelboards and distribution equipment assemblies up close.  Our September meeting will give you the opportunity to learn about the latest in Rotary UPS technology, review solar applications, and "Walk through a Catalog" of switchboards, panels, and switchgear.  Wear safe, comfy shoes, and join us on September 28th, at IEM, in Fremont.

I'm an electrical engineer, geek, writer, reader, explorer, and supporter of the green energy movement. 

I've been involved in renewable energy in one way or another since the mid 1970's when I discovered solar power, photovoltaics, and small wind power through magazines like Home Power and Mother Earth News. Putting a 300W PV system on a remote cabin was a big deal back them when modules were $30/W and inverters put out a square wave that would eat your computer printer. We've come a long way and today I work on multi-megawatt PV systems that cost less than $2/W installed. I still feel a thrill when I see sunlight being turned into electricity, it never gets old.

Clayton Such is Chief Operating Officer at IEM, overseeing all direct sales, support, and corporate initiatives.  Clayton joined IEM Power Systems in 2011 and has over 10 years’ experience in the power and control systems industry in various senior roles in sales and engineering, where he has developed over 150 MW of distributed resource projects.
